Christmas interview

I decided that it would be really nice to ask some people in the public a few questions about Christmas. The questions were...

Questions:

  • What is the best thing about Christmas?
  • What is one of your family traditions you have at Christmas?
  • What does Christmas mean for you?

The people I asked and there positions are:

  • John Key – MP for Helensville, and Leader of the National Party
  • Cathy Cottle - Mother to two gorgeous girls, wife of an amazing husband, New Entrant Teacher at Taupaki, an awesome school.
  • Libby Taylor – Mother, Wife
  • René Van Lune – Flower Grower
  • Wendy Gillon – Merchant: Horticultural Supplies
  • Zalia Nathan – Part time shop assistant
  • Lyon – Caltex Store Manager
  • Shane Gravatt – Student, KingsWay

These were their responses:

What is the best thing about Christmas?

John: Spending time with my kids and the rest of the family

Cathy: The fact that so many people from so many walks of life, and cultural backgrounds, remember the birth of Jesus, together – and hopefully catch glimpses of the intention of His life.

Libby: Giving – not necessarily gifts but giving of yourself, especially to those who have nothing.

René: Coming together as a family.

Wendy: Spending time with family.

Zalia: Summer Holidays, Hot days, long nights.

Lyon: Bringing people closer together.

Shane: The suspense of waiting for Christmas day.

What is one of your family traditions you have at Christmas?

John: Special Christmas dinner with extended family in Christchurch, some time during December

Cathy: The tree always goes up for the 1st of December, and we (me and the girls) make a gingerbread house and decorate it with lollies, then we give it away to a family who we think will enjoy the treat. We have many more traditions; a holiday at Whangamata, the food we eat… Christmas is full of them.

Libby: As a family we always work together on Christmas Eve – This is always a time of family & togetherness. We also have an orphan’s breakfast on Christmas morning, especially for those who don’t have family here.

René: Have an Oamish family dinner with the whole family.

Wendy: Making old fashioned figgy puddings with our own dried figs.

Zalia: Hangi.

Lyon: Sharing meal and drinks.

Shane: Sitting on Mum and Dad’s bed exchanging presents.

What does Christmas mean for you?

John: Time to reflect on the year and celebrate and relax with family and friends

Cathy: Christmas means love. The love of a God who so wants us to choose Him, that He came and lived through all the hardships of life, as a man. What God gave up for us- the sacrifice, that’s love. The love of a family separated every other day of the year. The love of friends who gather around the BBQ. The love of cousins swimming at the beach all day and crawling into sandy beds to chatter away the night. Love in a smile. Love.

Libby: Celebration of life – a real giving time, what God gave us, a time for excitement, joy, new things (not presents), anticipation, family, new , laughter

René: That Christ came on this Earth to show us how to walk with Him.
Wendy: The chance to have a couple of days off and spend it with friends and family that you don’t ordinarily have time to catch up with.

Zalia: A time for celebrations

Lyon: Celebrate birth of Christ

Shane: Celebration of a great gift from God.
