![]() At the Telstra clear stadium 10 days after Easter camp, the noise conference began. The object of noise was to bring together Christian musicians, help them up skill, inspire them into doing greater things, have fun and make lots of noise. In my opinion, they did a pretty good job of achieving that over the weekend. Easter camp was my spiritual recharging of last year, I didn’t go this year but noise served as a suitable substitute. It was that good. The first night, Thursday night, an Aussie by the name of Phil Baker spoke at the opening meeting about the power and influence of music. Did you know experiments show that lab rats, when exposed to a syncopated rhythm (voodoo drums) for a short length time, go crazy and begin killing each other. Music is very influential. After a short break we were back to watch the premier screening of the Parachute 06 live DVD. Playing afterward were, Victor rose, Parachute band, Brooke Fraser, Juliagrace, &Kingston, who were all very good. Arriving Friday morning we were pumped full of excitement. After the morning meeting at which Mark de Jong spoke about the need for more songwriters I went to the leadership session by Phil Baker. He gave three points on how to be a good leader (I noted them down)
Phil Baker is really a very good speaker (for an Aussie); he holds your attention with amusing examples and huge descriptive words which keep you on your toes. Words like reciprocity or ineluctable, for example. Rushing morning tea we got back and watched Nathan sing at the Songwriting Critique clinic. The panel had some advice to give but were generally impressed and full of praise. Immediately afterward, we went to Phil Joel’s Song writing tutorial and then I attended the Jeff Crabtree Keyboard clinic. I won’t say too much about the Keyboard clinic because unless you are a musician the info is meaningless. In fact even some of the people who attended the clinic got lost; you really had to know not only your majors & minors but also dorians, pentatonics, mixolydians, and lydians, as well.
Saturday was heavily songwriter and guitarists orientated. I lost Fridays notes with Phil Joel’s autograph on them, gutted, but (this is where I get to tell you that the service was good) they gave me a new pad for free. I took screeds of notes that day. The highlight though was the noise concert, beginning with Jason (used to go to Kingsway) playing one of Mozart’s piano concertos and gradually increasing in intensity through victor rose to peak with Rapture Ruckus & Mumsdollar before easing of to Juliagrace then Brooke Fraser. It was brilliant, you guy’s have to come to the noise concert next year. The best thing for me was the fact that the artists, when not on stage or leading seminars were hanging out with the rest of us and attending other people’s seminars. I was surprised how down to earth all those guys are. The noise conference has inspired me to use my talents to their fullest potential. |
