After a long but fun bus trip down, a group of about 40 of us finally arrived at Tarawera camp at 2am so quickly got settled in ready for an early start the next day. Weather was not fantastic but still good enough to have a fun day up the mountain. The majority of the group headed to the sliding slopes with our Real Estate Signs, toboggans and large tarp. The hike up the hill was well worth the slide down, I think at one stage there must have been 15 – 20 people on the tarp, watch out kids. The sliding group was soon joined by the group that had been up Snowboarding, as conditions were not good up there, but that just led to some more adventures on the tarp. After lunch the mountain cleared enough for the Snowboarders to have another go up the upper mountain, which lead to them having a few adventures, firstly with Sam’s close encounter with the T-bar and then a pretty scary experience with Nige going over an icy cliff, but prayers were answered and Bryce found him completely unharmed, much to other witnesses & snow patrols amazement. And we mustn’t forget Glen’s own experience with the T-bar. Once we were all safely back on the bus we headed back down to camp, where we had a fantastic meal waiting for us, prepared by Dene & Alan, who we are very grateful for coming along to keep our belly’s full – a job very well done, thank you. The evening was just a good time hanging out, with chat, cards and music, before a lot of tired bodies headed of to bed. Unfortunately Sunday was not what we planned as the mountain was closed, but we headed towards home early and stopped for a couple of hours at the hot pools before lunch in Taupo. It was then all the way home, a lot quieter than the trip down with a lot of weary travellers, but I must say the back of the bus was a lot livelier than the front. And all that driving is thanks to Murray, very much appreciated. So even though the weekend wasn’t all to plan, it was a great time away with everyone having a lot of fun. Nic & Bryce |
