Hunting Trip 2006

On Friday the 18th October, 14 of us boys from KBC, loaded up the hilux and a couple of other vehicles and headed down to the mighty Taranaki for the 2006 Wild goat hunt. We had a good team this year with ages ranging from 13-23 and everyone keen as to stretch there legs and chase some goats. The purpose of the trip is to get the boys out there roughing it for a weekend in Gods awesome creation, building relationships with each other and just letting boys be boys. No guns are taken on the trip, as there are a lot of people and its good just teaching the boy's about good old fashioned goat chasing.

We arrived to my cousin’s 5000 acre property in the back blocks of the Naki late on Friday night, with the journey down there taking more than 5 hours everyone was happy to arrive. A little powerless hut nestled half way down a valley was to be our home for the night. For some of the boys they had never been in a hut like this before, but there were no complaints, only excitement.
We woke up to a beautiful sunny morning and got a good hearty breakfast of bacon and eggs cranking on the BBQ's. After everyone was fed we all loaded on the back of the hilux and headed down to the end of the farm to start our first hunt looking for goats to be caught. Our first goats were spotted after an hours walk, all the boys strategically placed themselves all over the hillside. It was quite cool just watching so many guys running through the bush after the goats as the goats made there escape. We ended up catching 2, one nanny and one kid, we let the nanny go and took the kid home as someone in the Church wanted a pet goat.

As the day went by, the guy’s energy levels never seemed to drop especially when some goats came into sight. At one stage we had about 5 guys up in the bush on a ridge top and the others making there way around the valley floor. Suddenly we seen some goats out in the middle of the paddock, everyone got on the hilux and we roared after them making good time, on my call everyone jumped off and we ended catching about 3.

On Saturday night we made hut's up in the bush and we all slept in them, lucky for us it didn't rain as I don't know how water proof they were. Everyone ate and slept well that night, it had been a big day running up and down those Naki hills. We had quick hunt on Sunday morning before we hit the road and made the long journey back to Auckland.

The weekend was very successful with a total of 10 goats been caught, 2 were brought home for pets, one was killed for educational purposes and the other 7 were released. I thought the boy's done real well with this effort as it is really hard catching goats on foot. It was a really fun weekend with everyone really well behaved and having great attitudes, so I look forward to doing it again next year.

If you know of someone that has a property with wild goats or pigs on it that I might be able to hunt, could you give me a call on 021 334 572.
